Er is niemand die van pijn houdt: het verhaal achter Lorem ipsum

“Er is niemand die van pijn houdt, die er naar zoekt, en het wil hebben, simpelweg omdat het pijn is…”

Het is een mooie zin, die, vertaald in het Latijn, deels is terug te vinden in ‘Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet’, die merkwaardige zin die je altijd ziet in ontwerpen van onder meer webpagina’s.

Ik had mezelf eigenlijk nog nooit afgevraagd wat die Latijnse tekst nu eigenlijk betekent en waarom ontwerpers juist die tekst gebruiken, totdat ik zojuist stuitte op de Lorem Ipsum-generator.

Daar lees je dat deze gekke tekst een interessante geschiedenis heeft en wel degelijk een doel dient. Lorem Ipsum is ook terug te vinden in Wikipedia, waar men het volgende zegt over de functie van de tekst:

“De teksten zijn een vorm van pseudo-Latijn: ze lijken op het eerste gezicht origineel Latijn te zijn, maar hebben in werkelijkheid volstrekt geen betekenis. De tekst staat vol met spelfouten en verbasteringen.
Dat is ook de reden waarom de teksten gebruikt worden door drukkers en zetters: bij een leesbare tekst zou de lezer afgeleid worden door de inhoud, terwijl het alleen om de vormgeving gaat. Bovendien heeft het Lorem Ipsum een redelijk normale afwisseling van de verschillende letters en korte en lange woorden, waardoor het beter bruikbaar is dan bijvoorbeeld: “Dit is een voorbeeldtekst. Dit is een voorbeeldtekst. Dit is een voorbeeldtekst””

De vertaalde tekst van Cicero vind ik ook mooi:

“On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.”
